As in many breeds, the origin of the Tamaskan Dog is subject to many theories, however it is generally accepted that the breed originated from Finland. They were bred for working and racing. It is also generally accepted that the breed evolved in England and / or America, with some of the original breeding stock being purchased from these countries in the 80's.

Known for its wolf like appearance, the Tamaskan Dog has no wolf content, contrary to popular rumor. The Tamaskan is sweet natured and good with children and small pets, this has made them a favorite with wolf lovers.

Tamaskan dogs are highly intelligent and need constant mental stimulation, with the correct training they can excel in obedience, agility and even heelwork to music as well as their original function as a sled dog.

The Tamaskan has a good recall and can be let off the lead making them a favorite amongst husky and Malamute lovers as well as wolf enthusiasts.

We believe that the Tamaskan is consistent in type

Here are some pictures of Tamaskan all of which look very similar but if you look closely you can see how they have steadily become more wolfy due to our selective breeding programs.

All the dogs used in the creation of the Tamaskan were chosen for their coloring, looks, temperament and also for their health, from the foundation dogs to the Finnish imports all these dogs have helped create the Tamaskan you see today.

We met all of the parents of our foundation dogs before we purchased them ensuring that they too had a wolf like look, but more importantly sound health and a good temperament.  However due to the amount of fresh Husky (the majority of the Finnish imports were at least 50% pure Siberian Husky) added in 2006 we may now see a rising problem with curly tails, we must be vigilant in our breeding programs and not breed from curly tailed dogs so this problem does not spread through the breed.

The more wolf like look that we have today

There are some kinks we are still working out, including ear size, coat thickness and overall bone but we believe we have made a lot of progress in a short space of time and things can only get better, mainly thanks to our continued integration of the Finnish imports. This is one of the reasons I have decided to go back to a Foundation dog on my next mating. This will increase muzzle length and overall bone, it will improve on my female and produce puppies with wolfier looks than their parents and improve the breed in general which is the object of being a Tamaskan breeder.
